Katarmal Sun Temple is a scenic and isolated Sun temple located at a distance of 19 KMs from Almora city. The car goes near the temple base from where one has to travel on foot for around 15 minutes to reach the temple. The path from car parking to temple has been recently done with side stone walls and sitting arrangements throughout the path. A new KMVN cafe is also about to open (July 2019) near the temple.
Katarmal Sun Temple is one of the only 2 Sun temples in India the other one being the more famous one Konark Sun Temple in Odisha.
Katarmal Sun Temple is popularly known as “Baraditya”. The temple is facing East and is probably the tallest and biggest temple of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand and was probably built by King Katarmal of Katyuri Dynasty.
There are as many as 45 miniature shrines in different groups clustering around the main shrine. This is indicative that these different shrines were constructed at different periods of time.
On the basis of architectural features and the inscriptions recorded on the pillars of the temples suggest that the date of temple around circa 13th century.
The entrance of the sanctum was provided with curved wooden doors which are currently displayed in the gallery of National museum in Delhi.
